Unique Student Identifier (USI)

What is the Unique Student Identifier (USI)? 

The USI is a reference number that provides you with access to an online record of your training achievements in Australia. Your USI is different to your University ID number, and is instead made up of a combination of ten numbers and letters.

Your USI is issued by the Australian Government. It is unique to you and is a lifelong number, so you only need to obtain your USI once.
 

Do I need to get a USI?

From 1 January 2023, all higher education students, including those who commenced prior to 2021, must have a USI to:

  • be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) or Commonwealth financial assistance (HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, OS-HELP and SA-HELP); or
  • to graduate and receive their award.

This is a requirement under the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (HESA). For more information, please visit .

Offshore international students do not require a USI if they completed all their study outside of Australia, and are not in Australia to graduate.

I am new domestic student, studying at ANU for the first time from 1 January 2021.

You must apply for and obtain a USI in order to be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and Commonwealth financial assistance through HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP , OS-HELP a²Ô»å SA-HELP.
 

I am a current domestic student who wants to claim Commonwealth Financial assistance for the first time.

You must apply for and obtain a USI in order to be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and Commonwealth financial assistance through HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, â¶Ä¯OS-HELP a²Ô»å SA-HELP.
 

I am a current domestic student who has a Commonwealth Support Place (CSP) or, who has claimed for Commonwealth Financial Assistance previously (HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, OS-HELP and SA-HELP). This includes domestic students who enrolled prior to 2021. 

You must apply for and obtain a USI in order to continue being eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and Commonwealth financial assistance through HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, â¶Ä¯OS-HELP a²Ô»å SA-HELP.

I am a domestic student wanting to graduate on or after 1 January 2023.  

You will need to apply for and obtain a USI in order to confer your degree (graduate) at ANU. This is the case regardless of when you completed your last course at ANU. 
 

I am an onshore international student studying at ANU.

You will need to apply for and obtain a USI in order to confer your degree (graduate) at ANU. 

 

The following exceptions apply:

  • If you are not in Australia to confer your degree (graduate), and started your study onshore in Australia before 1 January 2023,  you are automatically exempt from needing a USI. Please advise the Graduation Office via graduation.officer@anu.edu.au of your situation. 
     
  • If you are not in Australia to confer your degree (graduate), and completed part or all of your studies in Australia before 1 January 2023,  you do not need a USI to receive your award. Please advise the Graduation Office via graduation.officer@anu.edu.au of your situation. 

I am an offshore international student studying at ANU.

 

  • If you have completed all your study offshore, and you are not in Australia to confer your degree (graduate), you do not need a USI to receive your award. Please advise the Graduation Office via graduation.officer@anu.edu.au of your situation.   
  • If you have completed all your study offshore, and you are in Australia to confer your degree (graduate), you need to apply for a USI and update your USI record within ANU's systems.

 

Where do I provide my USI?

You can add your USI on ISIS via the pathway:

NavBar (Compass Icon) > Menu > Personal Details > Unique Student Identifier

This pathway can also be used to confirm if you have already provided your USI to ANU.

Please note that you will only be able to enter your USI into ISIS once. If you believe that you have made a mistake when entering your USI, please contact Student Central.

We recommend applying for a USI as soon as you have accepted your offer to study at ANU. This way, you'll have your USI ready to go when you enrol in your courses and complete any eCAFs.

Where do I get a USI?

Applying for a USI is fast and free, and you keep the same USI for life. You can apply for a USI in as little as five minutes at .

Can someone help me apply for a USI?

Someone can create a USI on your behalf, as long as they have your permission and meet one of the roles or relationships outlined by the Office of the Student Identifiers Registrar. Find out more .
