Socially Responsible Investment Policy review update
|
Our university community has recently drawn our attention to investment in companies that derive revenue from arms manufacture and sales. In response, ANU invited staff, students, and alumni to participate in a review of our Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Policy.
We received almost 900 eForm submissions which informed the recommendations made to the ANU Council. This was followed by a town hall forum attended by more than 100 members of our community. The town hall provided the opportunity to discuss the University’s investment portfolio and how positive and negative screens operate within the SRI Policy. We have listened to that feedback from our community.
On 9 August, the ANU Council endorsed proposed updates to the University’s Socially Responsible Investment Policy.
The Council has resolved that the University’s Long Term Investment Pool will not invest in controversial weapons manufacturers and civilian small arms manufacturers. This resolution adds to existing investment screens relating to coal, gambling, pornography and tobacco. The University will also seek further opportunities to implement positive screenings related to gender equality, First Nations-led companies, and managing modern slavery risks.
This is an important step. The University will continue to review its policy settings to ensure investment decisions are aligned to our values. The implementation of these changes will take some time as the University works with its external investment managers to ensure they are carried out effectively.
We will continue to keep our community updated. Thank you to everyone who participated in our consultation, we are proud to see this level of engagement from our community.

Peer led inclusive and respectful communities
|
In response to the incredible student feedback, the Respectful Relationships Unit and the Inclusive Communities team merged this year to form the Inclusive and Respectful Communities team. This combined team was developed with the goals to help facilitate change and address a broad range of harmful behaviours within our community here at ANU and to expand peer-led development and delivery of this work.
Since then, we have:
|
- Delivered face to face programs to over 3000 students and staff
- Developed and launched a specific online Rights, Relationships and Respect module for Higher Degree Research students
- Initiated a peer-led redesign of the Enlivening Rights, Respect and Relationships (RRR) face-to-face consent program
- Embedded peer-designed anti-racism content into student leadership training
- Integrated a peer-led re-design of the University’s Bystander Intervention offerings.
|
Moving into 2025, we will continue to invest in peer-led activities and co-design projects, expand the RRR online program to offer a staff specific module and develop anti-racism specific training resources for students and staff with a goal to initiate real and meaningful change.
If you would like to request training or explore your community prevention options email Respect@anu.edu.au.
