Welcoming Dr Frédéric Grare to the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app Security College

A renowned expert on the Indo-Pacific, Dr Frédéric Grare has joined the ANU ¾«¶«´«Ã½app Security College as a Senior Research Fellow as part of an expert program sponsored by the government of France.  

During his time at NSC Dr Grare will examine geopolitics and maritime security in the Indian Ocean. 

“This is a problem for Australia and this is a problem for France... We are collectively responsible for protecting our national security – and we have to work together,” says Professor Rory Medcalf, Head of the NSC.

ANU experts give evidence to support Duty of Care Climate Bill

Professor Mark Howden, Professor Hilary Bambrick and Associate Professor Emma Aisbett gave evidence at the public hearing for the Climate Change Amendment Bill 2023 Inquiry.  

If achieved, this amendment would enshrine a duty of care towards future generations and require lawmakers to consider the health and wellbeing of current and future generations in decisions that have environmental impacts and climate change risks.

Sculpting Science: A Glass Act

Marrying art and science, Professor Simon Haberle from the ANU School of Culture, History and Language has just embarked on, in partnership with multi-award-winning artist Jennifer Kemarre Martiniello: The Stories Beneath My Ancestors Footprints.

Jazz Futures Symposium 

Thursday 14 March, 9.30am-6pm – 15 March, 8.30am-7.30pm 

Step into the future as the ANU School of Music explores the new and future directions of jazz. Take part in a two-day symposium examining present and potential transformations within the genre through a series of presentations, performances, and social dinners.  

 

Tenuous Technology Transfers Between China and Ethiopia Talk

Thursday 14 March, 4-5.30pm 

China’s quick expansion in the developing world, in particular the Sub-Sahara African countries, has spawned public debates and generated new fields of scholarship over the past couple of decades. In this talk, Dr Liang Chen, a visiting fellow at the Australian Centre on China in the World examines whether China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects and private investment contribute to the industrial development in Africa through the lens of technology transfer. 

 

Ancient Echos: Jazz music meets classical Chinese poetry 

Saturday 16 March, 2-3pm 

Enrich your eardrums this Saturday as Taipei-based jazz collective Zy the Way ?? uses poems from the ancient collection of poetry Book of Songs (Shijing ??) to seamlessly blend 3000-year-old ancient Chinese poetry and original jazz. ANU College of Asia and the Pacific Postdoctoral Fellow Annie Ren will provide translations and exegesis of the poems in between songs. 

 

How the Mahabharata derailed my life, and how I lived to tell the tale

Wednesday 20 March, 6-8pm 

Join the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific for its inaugural lecture in their Professorial Lecture Series as Professor McComas Taylor explores the captivating world of the epic poem Mahabharata. Discover the epic's enduring influence across cultures, from ancient manuscripts to modern media, and uncover its profound impact on Indian culture and beyond.

Seeking staff feedback: ANU Mental Health Strategy

The ANU Mental Health Strategy Review, led by Professor Lyndall Strazdins and the Mental Health Strategy Review Taskforce within the University Experience Division, is excited to announce the next stage of our staff and student consultations is now open. We want to hear more and we want to hear from you. 

We now have an open call for consultations running from 19 March – 18 April. Please share your experiences, suggestions, and concerns - visit the to find out more.

Call for Nominations – Professional Staff Member of ANU Council

On 25 May 2024, Mr Millan Pintos-Lopez will conclude his two-year term as the elected professional staff member on the ANU Council. Leading to an election to identify the next representative.  

To be eligible to be nominated, the nominee must have been a full-time or part-time standard or fixed term professional staff appointment in the University on payday 29 February and paid a salary by the University on that day.

Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training | People and Culture

Tuesday 2 April

This half-day interactive workshop by Dave Widders, Anaiwan man from Armidale NSW and connected with the Kamilaroi mob of Northwest NSW (Moree), will provide staff with an introduction to Indigenous history and culture in Australia.
