Global Undergraduate Awards 2023
The programme helped me realise that there are pathways to have your work at undergraduate level recognised. It instilled in me that irrespective of your degree, level, major or minor, that there is value in what you study at university.
Last month Bachelor of International Security Studies 2023 graduate Justin Khouw from Australian 精东传媒app University, was awarded top accolade as a Global Winner at the annual summit held in Dublin on 8 November 2023.
Each year thousands of students from around the world submit their undergraduate research projects to The Global Undergraduate Awards (GUA), the world鈥檚 leading pan-discipline, undergraduate research awards programme. These submissions are reviewed by more than 600 academics who volunteer as judges and pick just 25 Global Winners, one from each category.
Justin won the Politics and International Relations category for his work titled 鈥淎ustralia鈥檚 nuclear-powered submarine future: an Indonesian assessment鈥.
Of his experience, Justin enjoyed his time meeting some of the brightest undergraduate researchers from around the world and it has inspired him to continue his research journey and has applied to undertake Honours in International Security at ANU in 2024.
鈥淭he GUA programme helped me realise that there are pathways to have your work at undergraduate level recognised. It instilled in me that irrespective of your degree, level, major or minor, that there is value in what you study at university.鈥
鈥淚 encourage all ANU students to take advantage of this unique opportunity to have your undergraduate research coursework awarded on the global stage. To paraphrase Anton Ego in Ratatouille, not everyone can undertake meaningful research, but meaningful research can come from anywhere,鈥 reflected Mr Khouw.
Eliza Martin, ANU Bachelor of Science 2023 graduate, received recognition as a Highly Commended recipient in the category of Life Sciences. She will also be continuing her learning journey and is commencing Honours in the field of genetics at the Royal Children鈥檚 Hospital Melbourne in 2024.
鈥淚 really enjoyed my trip to Dublin to experience the UA Summit full of presentations, keynote speakers and social events with the other award winners. It was a really fantastic to hear from such a range of students and multidisciplinary research topics as many conferences are more field specific.鈥
鈥淚t was great to present our work from ANU courses to world-leading researchers and to connect with judges and students from across the globe鈥.
The 2024 programme will commence in January and final-year undergraduate students who complete their research in English can submit their coursework projects to be judged. Global winners only are sponsored to attend the UA Summit annually with flights and accommodation covered. Please contact Student Life for further information.
