Council held its fourth meeting of 2024 in person in the Boardroom of the Research School of Physics.

Council Membership 

Council welcomed Mrs Megan Easton as the newly appointed Professional Staff member on Council. The confirmation of Mr Rob Whitfield’s appointment and the reappointment of Ms Tanya Hosch to Council, as members appointed by the Minister of Education, was also acknowledged. 

Executive Movements

Professor Rebekah Brown was welcomed as an Observer ahead of her commencement as Provost and Senior Vice-President on 17 June 2024.

Council acknowledged and thanked the following departing Council and staff members: 

  • Ms Naomi Flutter as Pro-Chancellor. Ms Flutter will continue to chair the Finance Committee under transition arrangements. Ms Alison Kitchen AM is the incoming Pro-Chancellor and will commence her role on 1 July 2024.

  • Mr Chris Price as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Mr Jonathan Churchill will undertake the role of COO while the recruitment process is completed.

Vice-Chancellor’s Report

Council noted the Vice-Chancellor’s report which included updates on the University’s appearance at Senate Estimates; engagement with staff and students regarding free speech on campus; the review of Graduation processes; the Vice-Chancellor’s Strategic Fund; consideration of nominations for building renaming; and discussions regarding on-campus childcare. 

Reconciliation Action Plan

Council approved the ANU Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, which has conditional approval from Reconciliation Australia. 

Modern Slavery Statement 2023

Council approved the University's  for publication and presentation to the Federal Government.

Socially Responsible Investment

Council approved the University’s plan to commence a review of the Socially Responsible Investment Policy, including seeking input from expert advisors and comprehensive stakeholder and community consultation.

Other Matters

Council considered several other significant issues including: the University’s improved international ranking; financial and WHS performance and reports; revised Research Strategy; ANU Medical Centre; and updates on the progress and performance of the First Nations Portfolio, Student Safety and Wellbeing and other Council Committees.
