The rundown - information you need at a glance

  • Planned network outage: The ANU firewalls are being upgraded on Saturday 13 April, between 6am and 2pm. This outage will impact all systems and services hosted on the network, except for Microsoft 365. .

Find your room for Semester 2 2024

Accommodation applications for Semester 2 are now open. ANU guarantees an offer of accommodation in one of 18 residences or other approved accommodation to all students who apply before 1 July 2024. More than just a roof over heads – our residences are all about immersing in events, building communities, accessing academic and wellbeing support and seizing leadership opportunities to shine.

Chancellor The Hon Julie Bishop appointed UN special envoy  

Chancellor The Hon Julie Bishop has been appointed as the United Nations’ Special Envoy on Myanmar. Before taking up the role of ANU Chancellor in 2020, Julie was Australia’s first female foreign minister, a role she held from 2013 to 2018. 

The UN said Julie brings “extensive political, legal management and senior leadership experience to the role”. Julie will continue in her role as ANU Chancellor while also undertaking her work with the UN.

How daylight savings affects your sleep and what you can do about it

If you find the daylight savings time change disorienting, you’re not alone. Aside from inconveniencing those of us with oven clocks, analogue watches and older cars, research has shown that the transitions in and out of daylight savings can also affect our bodies.

Dr Tergel Namsrai, a neuroscientist from the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, explains the surprising health risks of daylight savings and little hacks that can help us feel well when the clock changes.

Science. Art. Film. free film screening and discussion

Wednesday 17 April, 6- 8pm

Science. Art. Film. Is a series that uncovers wacky, weird and wonderful facets of science and art in films. Films are screened for free at the and are followed by discussions with artists and ANU scholars from different disciplines.

In a post-apocalyptic world, teenage bio-hacker Vesper is presented with a chance to save her struggling community if she can find a way to cultivate a precious discovery of seeds. Vesper presents both positive and negative dimensions of genetic engineering, both fulfilling and subverting genre conventions. This film also explores ‘biohacking’ – genetic engineering by lay people – and invites audiences to consider the implications for the ‘real’ world.

The colours of intervention: Mapping the world, shaping resistance

Wednesday 24 April, 6-8pm

Security zones, crucial in international interventions, shape daily life for locals and expats. UN missions rely on colour-coded maps, designating safe areas and danger zones. These colours hold specific meanings, influencing perceptions and practices in urban environments.

The racial wealth divide, elites and tax justice

Tuesday 23 April, 5.30-7.30pm 

Over the past decade escalating wealth inequalities are increasingly evident across the globe and pose fundamental analytical and political issues.

Join Mike Savage, Professor at London School of Economics and Political Science at this public lecture as he deep dives into exploding wealth inequality, its impact on society, and legal loopholes used by the ultra-rich.

On campus pathology services re-open

After a long hiatus due to COVID-19, On campus pathology services will return on-campus starting Monday 8 April 2024. The services are offered by Capital Pathology and will be co-located with ANU Medical Centre. Open hours:

  • Monday - 8.30am – 12.30pm
  • Tuesday - 8.30am – 12.30pm
  • Thursday - 8.30am – 12.30pm
